MAR ADENTRO, SEA INSIDE
Grab a map of Mexico and if Los Cabos means or looks like “the capes” to you, then you got it right. Perhaps you have an image in mind of what the scenery is like at the tip of a peninsular: behind, rocks and reefs; up front, three directions of infinity. Right again. What’s more striking here is the sight of a river, almost sea-bound, deciding to stop only a beach short of the ocean, creating a lagoon among desert and beach, an oasis. These must have left a lasting impression in Miguel Ángel Aragonés, whose ideal of architecture is about generating “sensations through space on a series of planes that are found within the realm of sensitivity”. He described the hotel’s Los Cabos site in his own words “the purest, most minimalist landscape a horizon could have drawn”.
Located in Los Cabos Resort Corridor, Mar Adentro, compared to its colonial surrounding of flagstone and stuccos, seems too recognisable for its oniric minimalism which its architect compares it to “a kind of Medina that opens out onto the sea”. This Medina features an infinite pool which seems to cover ground level of the entire hotel. The hotel’s 6-storey buildings instantly appeared as if floating blocks on the water. “Each floating volume contains interiors that form, in turn, independent universes.” The rooms of this hotel were literally independent before they are sent on site to be assembled.
In a way, minimalistic architecture is quite relatable to nature. Both are abstract, more rhetorical than human establishment. Human establishment is like sailing from Los Cabos to the Philippines for centuries, yet rhetorically we still refer to the ocean as endless ocean… whatever!
For the health-obsessed, the Mar Abierto Spa creates bespoke regimens for clean living where nutritional routines and training sessions are on offer together with clinical aromatherapy cycles. For me personally, the sight of Aragonés’ Zen-spirited buildings casting calming reflections on the diaphanous water, is sufficiently therapeutic.
